Astrology developed in many cultures, and two of the largest living traditions are Western (mostly tropical) and Vedic (sidereal). They are related but distinct.

The zodiac

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac — anchored to the equinoxes. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac — anchored to the actual stars. The difference is roughly 24 degrees.

Dashas vs transits

Vedic astrology has a powerful timing system called dashas: long planetary periods. Western astrology emphasises transits and progressions.

Lunar focus

Vedic astrology uses 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) as a fundamental layer. Western astrology emphasises the Sun more.
