About the Chinese zodiac

The Chinese zodiac (Shengxiao, 生肖) is a 12-year cycle in which each year is associated with a specific animal. According to legend, the Jade Emperor held a great race, and the 12 animals that crossed the finish line gave their names to the years.

Each animal pairs with one of the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), forming a 60-year cycle. The element is determined by the last digit of the year: 0-1 — Metal, 2-3 — Water, 4-5 — Wood, 6-7 — Fire, 8-9 — Earth.

Years also alternate between Yin and Yang: even years are Yang (active, masculine energy), odd years are Yin (passive, feminine energy).
