Number 15: The Devil

The fifteenth arcanum is the energy of attachment. As an energy in the matrix, the Devil marks someone whose path involves a serious encounter with the patterns that bind — habits, addictions, fears, obsessive relationships, material entanglements — that you helped create and that you keep maintaining. You may have been called intense, dramatic, or chained to your own habits. The lesson is sober: the chains are loose. You have only to step out. The shadow of the Fifteen is identifying with the bondage. The arcanum can become attached to its own suffering, dramatising the chains rather than examining them. The Devil without insight becomes the perpetual victim of patterns the victim is co-authoring. The growth task is honest self-examination, recognition of complicity, and the courage to choose differently — repeatedly, since the patterns will keep offering themselves.

Intensity, awareness of shadow, capacity to handle dark material, sexual and creative power, the willingness to look at what others avoid, eventual freedom hard-won through examination, depth, magnetic presence.

Addiction risk (substance, relationship, work), obsessive patterns, identification with suffering, refusal to acknowledge one's own complicity, materialism, controlling behaviour, jealousy, manipulation, dramatising bondage instead of stepping out of it.

Examine your patterns honestly. The Fifteen's chains stay only as long as the wearer refuses to see them. Get help — therapy, recovery community, mentor — for whatever has been gripping you. Recognise the difference between depth and stuckness; intensity is not always insight. Choose freedom repeatedly; the first choice does not finish the work.
