Tollbooth

A booth on a road where passage is paid for — the deliberate point at which the route requires a fee.

A tollbooth in a dream is the dream's image of a passage that has a price built into it. The road does not stop being a road; it just requires payment at this point to continue. The dream brings the booth when something in your life — an opportunity, a piece of access, a stage of a process — has reached the point at which the continuation is not free, and the fee is the test of whether you really meant to go on. A tollbooth paid and passed through is the dream affirming that the cost was accepted and the journey continues. A tollbooth where the queue is long and you have no coin is the dream noting that the next stretch of road has a fee you are not currently equipped for, and the choice is between paying with something else or turning back.
