Abstract

Shame

The wish to disappear from sight — the body's response to being seen in a way you cannot bear.

Shame in a dream is the dream's image of the wish to disappear from sight. Shame is not the same as guilt; guilt is about an act, shame is about being a person who could be looked at and found wanting. The dream brings shame when something in your life — an exposure, a comparison, an inherited verdict — has put you under a gaze you cannot stand under. Shame felt and stayed with is the dream telling you the verdict is being examined honestly rather than swallowed. Shame converted immediately into rage or into hiding is the dream noting that the look you cannot bear is still doing its work, and the redirection is buying you no real distance from it.
