Rough Pencil in dreams

A graphite writing tool that can be erased — provisional marks that can still be changed.

Rough texture adds friction — the symbol is real and useable but the surface of the situation has been worn. The dream is rarely critical; it is noting that the work of it has left marks.

A pencil in a dream is the dream's image of provisional writing — committing thought to a form that can still be revised. The dream brings the pencil when you are at the drafting stage of something — a plan, a self, a piece of work — and the right move is to mark things down without yet locking them in. A pencil sketching steadily is the dream telling you the draft is taking shape and changes are still allowed. A pencil with a broken point is the dream noting that the means of provisional thinking has failed and the work is paused for an unglamorous reason.
