Orphanage

A place that houses children without parents — institutional care standing where a family did not.

An orphanage in a dream is the dream's image of an institutional substitute for what should have been personal care. Orphanages are competent and they are not homes; the children are fed and named and turned out with a part of the early life left unfilled. The dream brings the orphanage when something in you — a young part of yourself, a recently begun project, a relationship in its first months — is currently being raised by systems rather than by a particular pair of hands. An orphanage seen as a kind, well-run building is the dream telling you the substitute is adequate and the child will live. An orphanage with corridors of unattended children is the dream noting that what depends on you personally is being routed through procedure, and the particular love that the young thing needed is not being supplied.
