The scar left by the umbilical cord — the literal mark of the first attachment.

A navel in a dream is the dream's image of the literal scar of the first attachment. Every body carries the mark of where it was once connected to the body that made it; the dream brings the navel when something in your life is returning you to the question of where you originally came from. A navel observed neutrally is the dream telling you the origin is acknowledged and at rest. A navel that hurts in the dream is the dream noting that the original attachment is sore — that something from the earliest part of your story is back in the room and asking for attention.
