Abstract

Hope

A stance that the not-yet can still be good — orientation toward a future that has not arrived.

Hope in a dream is the dream's image of orientation toward a future that has not yet arrived. Hope is not optimism; optimism predicts, hope merely stays open. The dream brings hope when something in your life — a treatment, a relationship being rebuilt, a long project — is in the phase where the outcome cannot be known and the choice is whether to keep the door open. Hope held honestly is the dream telling you the open posture is real and is helping. Hope that has hardened into a specific demand on the future is the dream noting that the open posture has become a contract, and the future will be punished for any deviation from what you expected.
