Abstract

Envy

The ache at someone else having what you wanted — a pointer toward an unowned desire of your own.

Envy in a dream is the dream's image of the ache at another person having what you wanted. Envy is not admiration; admiration enlarges, envy contracts. The dream brings envy when something in your life is showing you, by way of someone else's possession of it, what you have not let yourself name as a desire. Envy looked at and named is the dream telling you the desire underneath is now available to be owned and worked toward. Envy that turns into spoiling — wishing the other person's good gone rather than wanting one of your own — is the dream noting that the pointer is being burnt rather than read.
