Abstract

Duty

An obligation you have accepted — the work owed in consequence of who you have agreed to be.

Duty in a dream is the dream's image of work owed in consequence of a role you have accepted. Duty is not imposed; it is accepted, and the acceptance is what binds it. The dream brings duty when something in your life — a child, an aging parent, a job you took on, a promise made in good times — is now asking for the performance the role implies. Duty taken up with full presence is the dream affirming that the role is being honoured. Duty done with resentment is the dream noting that the original acceptance has lapsed and you are performing the work without the consent that was supposed to make it bearable.
