Abstract

Despair

The conviction that nothing more can be done — a closed door at the end of effort.

Despair in a dream is the dream's image of the conviction that nothing more can be done. Despair is not sadness; sadness still expects a response. The dream brings despair when something in your life — a loss, a long failure, a body or system that will not respond — has reached the point where the inside of you has begun to close the door. Despair faced and spoken to another person is the dream telling you the door has been seen by someone else, and the closure is not yet final. Despair carried in silence is the dream noting that the closure is being finalised in private, and the supports that could have prevented it are not being called.
