Compassion
A turning toward another's suffering — feeling-with that does not collapse into the other's pain.
Compassion in a dream is the dream's image of a turning toward another person's suffering without collapsing into it. Compassion is not pity; pity holds distance and compassion does not. The dream brings compassion when someone in your life — a colleague, a stranger, a family member — is in real difficulty and your task is to be present without being pulled under. Compassion extended at the right scale is the dream telling you the contact is real and useful. Compassion that has tipped into absorption — taking on the other person's pain as if it were yours to carry — is the dream noting that the contact has become a confusion of bodies, and your usefulness has dropped.
