A dream within a dream is the dictionary's image of awareness doubling on itself. The dream is using its own structure to point at something: usually a layer of unawareness in your waking life. On waking, the question to ask is the same as for sleep-in-dream: what have I been refusing to see clearly?
Where you often see it. The dream notices itself — you realise you are dreaming inside the dream, or wake up only to find you are still dreaming. The dictionary reads this as awareness doubling on itself, often during a creative or analytic phase of life.
What it is not. Dream-within-a-dream is not a sign of fragmented identity. It is structural play and is documented across sleep research.
